Are any of thes items useless or a waste of money for having good skin?

Burts bee's is not only good for the skin, but extremely soothing for skin, lips, etc. Honestly it just depends on your skin issues. Every girl has to try out different products and see whats working out best for their skin. Over the years I've found that clean and clear does the best for me and I have burts bee's products for my feet, lips, and some of their refining products. I believe you should explain to your mom that you need to try things out, and see what works best for you, let her know that you understand her opinion, but it is your money, and as long as you aren't spending it on "inappropriate clothing or drugs" you should be just fine! Wish you the best. (ps, during your trial and error period, try getting small sizes of the product and test out each for a week and see if you notice positive changes! Makes the whole process of elimination so much easier!)
